The course purports to provide the students with a basic understanding of the period from the beginning of the Italian Renaissance to the Age of Enlightenment. The terms Renaissance and Humanism refer to a broad spectrum of new political, philosophical and scientific ideas, and artistic developments, which arose in Italy and were subsequently received north of the Alps, eventually becoming key elements in the formation of modern Europe. This process, however, occurred in a specific historical context. The Renaissance and the Age of Humanism was also the age of recurring plague epidemics, the witch craze, and the Ottoman advance into Southeastern and Central Europe. It was the age of reformation and religious wars and of overseas discovery and expansion. The course is cross-disciplinary, i.e. it aims to present the changes brought about by the Renaissance from a broad historical and comparative perspective, instead of treating them as more or less isolated phenomena. The course consists of a row of lectures followed by seminars. The lectures will introduce a number of key issues, which will then be explored and discussed in detail in the seminars. These will include analyses of contemporary texts and monuments, as well as of modern literature dealing with the period.
